But seriously. It was a fine film and I loved it. I actually have no serious complaints about it. Which is weird for me seeing as how I use to be a film critic. Though, if you look online you can find plenty of negative reviews on it.
One of the big issues is how long it is. And how it doesn't stick to the central story. As a Tolkien fan, I actually appreciated that about it. All the added stuff has to do with what everybody else was doing at the same time. Otherwise, there would be no explanation for why Gandolf just up and disappears in the next film. Honestly, the whole Necromancer plot (spoilers) is the one I am looking forward to more. Though there is a noticleble tonal shift when switching between the Dwarf's and the Necromancer plots.
But I was not kidding. See it. It's lots of fun. The 3D was tastefully done. And I am not a fan of 3D. The 48FPS did not add that much to the film. But it didn't take anything away either. I would recommend seeing it in 48FPS just once to see what the fuss is about. It really does look like you are seeing Middle Earth through a window. Though it does have a BBC/PAL look to it. And apparently it makes 3D view-able to those who get headaches normally.
If nothing else, you get to spend close to 3 hours in Middle Earth. And that can't be a bad thing.
