This comes under the category of do not stop play for rules discussions, but look it up and get it right before the next session.
Today I asked Joe what sort of action it requires to drink a potion. (I didn't dare ask James to look it up.) The answer given was 1/2 a move action. The core rule book (page 184 Activate Magic Item) says "Certain magic items, however, do need to be activated, especially potions, scrolls, wands, rods and staffs. Unless otherwise noted, activating a magic item is a standard action." Thus, Mithril should not have been able to cast a spell and drink a potion on the same turn. One only gets one standard action per turn.
Note, "retrieve a stored item" is a move action. Thus, one could retrieve and drink a potion in a single turn, but that's about it in a given round excepting swift, immediate or similar very brief actions.
I would note also footnote 3 in the lower right corner of page 183. "If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you can combine one of these actions with a regular move." Footnote 3 is associated with "Draw a weapon" and "Ready or drop a shield." This reflects how we have been playing it, and how I always remember it being played back into Society days. Joe has stated an intent to void Footnote 3. So long as he understands this would be a house rule and not Book, no loud grumbles. (Well, perhaps a little muttering under my breath. It just slows things down for no reason I can see.)

Good stuff. I had been reading other things and assumed we had been playing it wrong all this time after all.
I was quite intent to let you drink the potion as part of your move action and then chuck a spell since the potion was out, but in hindsight many potions represent spells and would allow you to create two spell effects which would be cheaty.
If only other people would dig into the rule book like you Bob, James could learn quite a bit.
Take a check mark!
